2025 Journal of Commerce Special FTZ Section

The Journal of Commerce has released its Special FTZ Section, spotlighting the history, growth, and impact of the U.S. Foreign-Trade Zones (FTZ) program. From its establishment by Congress in 1934 to today’s 1,300+ active operations across all 50 states and Puerto Rico, U.S. FTZs have consistently provided U.S. companies with the tools to strengthen domestic investment, reduce costs, and compete globally.

Today, more than 550,000 Americans are employed in FTZ operations, with nearly $150 billion in merchandise was exported from U.S. zones in 2023. This special feature highlights how U.S. FTZs continue to foster innovation, resilience, and public-private collaboration — making them a proven model for economic growth and supply chain stability.
